Software Localization
Whether you need to translate operator panel messages, an on-line help or the user interface of an entire application, what you are really talking about is software localization. Localization implies the adaptation of material to a particular geographic area, involving both linguistic and cultural aspects. In the case of software, here are a few examples of the issues that need to be addressed:
- respecting string length limitations
- resizing dialog boxes and buttons
- handling hot keys and shortcuts
- managing international numbering and naming conventions
Due to the complexity of such projects, emphasis needs to be placed on project management, language engineering and coordination.
Language technology solutions and systems are becoming ever more efficient, however as manual translation work is increasingly optimised, project management activities are destined to increase as the technical and coordination aspects of projects become more labour-intensive.

In a software localization project, this is undeniably the most important phase. Every aspect of the project needs to be analysed carefully together with our language technology engineers, in order to identify and address any potential problems in advance, thereby reducing the likelihood of encountering costly problems downstream in the process. Once all aspects have been clarified, a project kick-off meeting will be arranged.

The translation of software requires a great deal of care and expertise. Software messages are often translated out of context, and this means it is essential that translators receive as much background information about the project as possible. Likewise, terminology databases are a must.

Once translation is complete, any particularities of the software need to be carefully checked. The strings and texts are subjected to a Quality Assurance test to ensure coherent terminology and translations.
Quality
Because of the complex nature of localization projects, a testing phase is highly recommended. In this phase, the localized content is compiled and then checked to ensure that everything is displayed correctly. We are available to perform these tasks on our side if desired.
After implementation of any change requests, the translation memories are updated and stored, ready to be used for any new versions of the software. The localized software is delivered to the client.
