Technical Documentation and the European Commission

The Machinery Directive 98/37/EC (formerly 89/392/EEC) is one of a series of directives introduced with the aim of creating a single European market for goods and services. In this respect, the Machinery Directive is responsible for introducing identical requirements for machinery safety among the member states of the European Economic area.

This Directive has been replaced by a new directive (2006/42/EC), that is applicable since 29 December 2009. In particular, point 1.7.4 of Annex I specifies that machinery must be accompanied by a translation of the instructions in the language of the country in which the machinery is to be used and by the instructions in the original language.
